Climbing The Ranks
How Technical Lead Dana Marchis went from being a graduate to leading a team of seven engineers
Dana Marchis is a Technical Lead at Take Off Labs. After joining the company as a graduate, over the course of just a few years she has worked her way up to now leading a team of seven engineers. Here is what she had to say about her journey at the company:
I heard about Take Off Labs for the first time back when I was a student, a few years ago, and I was at the event Careers in IT. I really was impressed by the company and what they had to offer graduates in terms of opportunities for progression. That day, I remember saying that I will work for Take Off Labs one day. A few months later, one of my friends that worked at the company said they were recruiting and suggested I apply. So, I decided to go for it, I sent in my CV, and here I am.
I was attracted by the idea of working remotely, and to be given great equipment like a MacBook by the company to do so. I was also very excited to learn a new programming language from scratch, and to work on products used by millions of golfers all over the world. As a student, it was the opportunity to work on real projects and gain some fantastic experience as a software developer.
All of the products that we are working on are interesting and fulfilling in their own way. Each of them has a specific element that makes them fun to work on as a developer. Currently, I am working on the GHIN products. It is really interesting because we are designing and developing features that directly affect the experience of golf associations, golf clubs, golfers and other users around the world. It is challenging because the products need to be efficient. We take care of implementing algorithms for various calculations, developing APIs, implementing user-friendly interfaces for both web and mobile applications.
Working for Take Off Labs is challenging, but it’s great. I never get bored doing what I do and I really love that. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge over the years, and I’ve really improved both my personal and professional skills.
For me personally, the best thing about working for Take Off Labs is that I get to work remotely but I also have the option to go into the office, to work together in person with other colleagues. The team is awesome and when we meet at HQ or have any other company meeting we have a lot of fun. Working on big software products that are used by millions of users around the world is very satisfying.
I would say that it will be challenging, but you will learn a lot of new things. You will have the opportunity to work with an awesome and fun team, on great projects, using the latest technology. You will gain the experience that you need to become a great software developer; you will learn how to design, develop, test, and maintain various functionalities used by millions of people.
